Madrid, New Mexico is a former coal mining boomtown turned artistic haven. Today it’s one of America’s most unconventional small towns and a village of artists and rugged individualists.

On this walking tour, you’ll follow its fascinating transformation, from its days as a mining settlement to its current status as a thriving art mecca, all through the joy of its legendary Christmas celebrations.

The tour starts at the Range West Gallery and winds through the historic main street. You’ll discover how after World War II and the closure of the mines, Madrid fell silent until artists rediscovered and revitalized it in the 1970s, breathing new life into its holiday traditions. As you continue exploring, you’ll experience the town through a combination of archival audio, original interviews, and published accounts.

You’ll pass Calliope Gallery, and hear how the owners showcase over 30 artists and promote accessible, locally-made arts and crafts. The tour ends at the Moonbow Herb Shop, where you can browse their collection of over 80 medicinal herbs blended into teas, tinctures, and salves by Lori Ottino.

Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:

• Immerse yourself in the annual Madrid Christmas Parade, formerly inaugurated by the state’s governor flipping the switch to turn on all the town’s lights
• Discover the original Toyland, a kids’ ride on a mini-locomotive through scenes from nursery rhymes, and hear its connection to Disneyland
• Explore the preserved mining structures that tell Madrid’s industrial story
• Hear from artists and artisans who have made Madrid their home, and the original work they produce, such as Johnsons of Madrid and Firehouse Studio
• See the restored Christmas light displays that made Madrid famous
• Learn how the town survived its transformation from a ghost town to an art colony

This 35-minute historical walking tour offers a blend of holiday magic and New Mexican history. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, history buff, or holiday traditionalist, Madrid’s unique story will capture your imagination.

Do not miss Open House Saturdays, when all the shops and merchants stay open until late, welcoming visitors to enjoy the Christmas lights with special events and treats.
